You may have heard of Coenzyme Q10 or CoQ10 but most people don’t realize how important this is for our bodies and our lifestyle fitness plans. CoQ10 is in almost every single cell in the human body. This means that it is found in literally billions of cells in the human body and must be for significant reasons. CoQ10 is one of the most important nutrients that your body needs for energy production and it is also one of the most powerful antioxidants available. Unfortunately as we age our bodies have rapidly declining CoQ10 levels. Many things are responsible for depleting CoQ10 levels which include toxins, stress, aging, as well as the statin drugs (HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors) that Americans take for heart problems and high cholesterol. Some doctors believe there is a link between age related health problems and the decline of CoQ10 levels in the body. As you read on you will realize how important CoQ10 is in your lifestyle fitness program.

Bad Cholesterol, Blood Pressure, and Heart Disease

CoQ10 can be an enormous help with some of the most common ailments that we face as our bodies age.
As an antioxidant CoQ10 can support arterial health by helping to inhibit LDL cholesterol from being oxidized and regenerating Vitamin E for even more antioxidant protection. Its effects on bood pressure have been proven in clinical trials where those taking CoQ10 showed reduced blood pressure readings. With CoQ10 supporting so many arterial and cardiovascular systems it really pays to be proactive by including CoQ10 to prevent heart disease and the possibility of surgery later in life.

CoQ10 can promote many health benefits. Some of the uses for supplemental CoQ10 include diabetes, migraine headaches, gum disease, improved exercise performance, immune disorders, asthma, and neurodegenerative problems. CoQ10 has become very well known for improving cardiovascular health and some studies have looked at CoQ10’s impact on the heart and benefits to blood pressure. It is important on so many cellular levels that a decline in CoQ10 will start to effect you in many ways. In fact, researchers have found decreased Coenzyme Q10 levels in 39% of people whose tests showed high blood pressure!

CoQ10 promotes healthier blood pressure by energizing the heart to pump blood more powerfully, thus improving blood circulation. CoQ10 also improves the flexibility of blood vessels, helping to keep blood vessels ‘young’.

Declining CoQ10

The human body can create its own CoQ10 but the rate of production starts to decline at the age of 20 and starts a very rapid decline once a person reaches 40. A poor nutritional program can also be responsible for the decline of CoQ10 in the body. The body needs vitamins B2, B6, B12, C, folic acide, niacinamide, and pantothenic acid to synthesize CoQ10 in the body. Statin drugs deplete CoQ10 very quickly but research has shown that taking supplemental CoQ10 can completely reverse the CoQ10 decline in the body. The evidence is so compelling that a petition has been filed with the FDA to request a CoQ10 recommendation be listed on statin drug labels. Toxins are another reason for rapid CoQ10 decline in the body. Since CoQ10 is such a potent antioxidant your levels can be quickly depleted by destroying free radicals in the body. In the book Ultrametabolism , by Dr. Mark Hyman, he suggests supplementing with CoQ10 to get the metabolism sparked to improve mitochondrial health which aids in energy production and fat loss. It will actually aid and fix your impaired mitochondria’s. This is why so many people have reported a very noticeable increase in energy after taking a CoQ10 supplement for a couple of weeks.

Natural Sources

CoQ10 can be added to your natural diet but to get 30mg worth you would have to eat either 1 pound of sardines, 2 pounds of beef, 2.5 pounds of peanuts, 2.5 pounds of herring, 30 tbsp. of canola oil, or 30 cups of broccoli. If you plan on eating these foods make sure not to fry them because that will also deplete the CoQ10. Getting enough CoQ10 from your diet can be a difficult and expensive task. Looking at the cost to efficiency ratio it is much cheaper to get a high quality CoQ10 supplement to add to your daily diet.

Safety and Supplementation

CoQ10 has been shown to be extremely safe when used as a supplement. Ask your doctor about a recommended level to suit your needs. A level of 30-60 mg/day is recommended to prevent CoQ10 deficiency but some people under heavy oxidative stress have taken 200-300 mg/day for several weeks to help repair their systems prior to going to a lower maintenance level. Adding CoQ10 may help you achieve energy levels that you haven’t experienced since your youth. If you have been thinking about adding an antioxidant to your life CoQ10 can give you those benefits plus many more.

40% of US People At Obesity Range

Stubborn fat around the midsection is probably the most common problem among people attempting to lose weight and living a lifestyle of being somewhat fit. With nearly 40% of the U.S. population at or nearing the obesity range that means there are plenty of people with this problem and most aren’t winning the battle. Aside from the unsightliness of having belly fat hanging over your belt there are also the hidden health risks involved with allowing your belly to continue to bulge. Having a large belly greatly increases the risk of heart disease and diabetes. Getting rid of this trouble area may make you look and feel better but it will also give you enormous health benefits. Here are 4 things you must do to begin your lifestyle fitness plan.

Decrease Stress

When your body is under stress it creates a hormone called cortisol. When cortisol is raised your body will store fat around the midsection. Much of the stored fat from cortisol is called VAT (visceral adipose tissue). This is fat tissue that builds up underneath the skin and around your internal organs. It is the most dangerous kind of fat to gain and it is what causes the belly to stick out so far. It is also most responsible for increasing triglyceride levels and increasing your risk of heart disease and diabetes. Some people think that by starving themselves and doing massive amounts of exercise will burn off the belly flab. Unfortunately self starvation and overworking your body will put your cortisol levels in the stratosphere. When this happens your body will be much more likely to burn muscle instead of that stubborn fat around your midsection. This will cause you to become skinnier but fatter and over time your metabolism will continue to be stunted by the lack of muscle mass. Make sure to get plenty of rest and reduce your stress levels. This is the first big step to putting a stop to gaining the belly fat and reversing the damage done. There are some natural nutritional supplements that can help aid in stress reduction which will ultimately lead to lower cortisol levels.

Regulating Blood Sugar

When eating a diet high in carbohydrates and simple sugars the body has a strong tendency to store those extra calories as fat. When you become insulin resistant your body then prefers to store that fat around the midsection. The fat around the midsection then makes you more susceptible to diabetes and metabolic syndrome. Eat a diet low in sugar and eat carbohydrates that are slower burning and high in fiber. Stay away from high fructose corn syrup at all costs! Keep you blood sugar stabilized through the day by eating a proper balance of fats, proteins, carbohydrates, and fiber rich foods. Balancing your glycemic load is the key to regulating insulin levels and burning steady levels of fat rather than storing it. Both alpha lipoic acid and cinnamon have been found to help regulate blood sugar levels for a healthy metabolism.

Take Omega-3 Everyday

Fat cells create immune system messengers called cytokines. Cytokines can increase inflammation and high inflammation levels puts stress on the body to make it get fatter. So the more fat cells you have the easier it is to keep getting fatter! To put a stop to this you can add Omega-3’s to your diet everyday. Omega-3’s are found in fish, flax seed, and walnuts. A high potency fish oil capsule taken everyday can help reduce inflammation and communicate with your fat burning genes to turn them on and get them revving high speed. The benefits of fish oil alone can help make immediate reductions in belly fat. I have seen clients lose and inch off of their waistline in 1 month without changing their diet or exercise routine. By simply adding a few grams of fish oil each day their bodies started metabolizing belly fat.

Tune Up Your Metabolism

Eat whole foods that are unprocessed and eat them often. Smaller meals eaten frequently will keep your metabolism charging strong. Eating actually kick starts your metabolism through the process known as thermogenesis. This is a process in your body in which it digests the food and creates heat to use it as energy. By eating several smaller meals through the day you are literally stoking the fire so that it burns hotter and faster. Think of when you don’t feed a fire and it starts to fade out and cool. The same thing happens with your body. Feeding it often will keep that fire burning hot and if you follow all of the other rules you will be burning fat tissue off of your belly. Green tea has been found to actually help increase the metabolism by a few percentage points per day. In the long run consistent green tea consumption may help you burn thousands of extra calories over a year.

It also acts as a powerful antioxidant and will go after those menacing free radicals that are damaging your body.

Do All 4 and Watch the Belly Fat Melt Away

If you start doing all of these things consistently you will notice a reduction in belly fat within a couple of weeks. In addition to these suggestions you should add two to three High Intensity Interval Training cardio sessions each week which will also speed up your results. Keeping your workouts short will allow you to keep your cortisol levels low while speeding up your overall metabolism.

Fish Oil is Indispensible to Lifestyle Fitness

There are a lot of supplements out there that are unnecessarily hyped up to promote sales, making all kinds of radical and unbelievable claims. There are only a couple supplements out there that really deserve all the hype. Fish oil is an indispensible addition to your healthy lifestyle. It’s one of the few that deserves the hype because it can do so many things for your body. If I can only recommend 1 natural supplement to my clients due to their budget constraints I always recommend fish oil over anything else. A high potency fish oil is a very small investment for all the benefits that it offers to a lifestyle fitness plan. The 3 major benefits it offers are:

Fish Oil Capsules

Fat Burning

A couple years ago I recommended it to a friend that was going to the gym fairly consistently but not losing any weight due to his diet. I recommended adding a few grams of double strength fish oil per day and in a month he called me to tell me he lost over an inch off of his waist and was down a couple belt notches. He didn’t change anything in his diet accept for adding those fish oil capsules 3 times per day. The Omega-3’s in fish oil turn on the fat burning genes in your body which makes them one of the best fat burners your money can buy. When most people think of fat burners they think of all the heavy stimulatory supplements on the market designed to speed up your metabolism. The problem with these fat burners is that they quickly burn out your adrenal glands and can stop working within a few weeks. Fish oil works by using a completely natural mechanism in the body. The fats in fish oil bind to your PPAR’s (peroxisome proliferator activated receptor’s). Different types of fat send messages and bind to your PPAR’s in different ways. The good fats will bind to your PPAR’s and turn on the fat burning mechanisms in your cells while bad fats will bind to your PPAR’s and turn off the fat burning mechanisms along with other damage. PPAR’s are highly concentrated on your liver and fat cells so it’s a good idea to send them the good fat signals!

Inflammation

We just talked about those PPAR’s that communicate with your DNA to turn your metabolism up and down. They are also largely responsible for inflammation. Inflammation is caused by poor diet, stress, lack of exercise, and even food allergies. Inflammation is a double edged sword. It cause aches and pains in your body and also causes you to gain more weight. By reducing the inflammation in your body you can reduce those achy pains that you feel everyday as well as create a body that is in more of a state of fat burning rather than fat storage. Taking fish oil and antioxidants can help reduce inflammation but you also want to get right down to whatever is causing it. To really get yourself healthy you need a multi-tiered approach that includes a good nutrition program with exercise.

Immune Function and Mood

The reduction in inflammation in your body gives it a stronger immune response to everything else. Your body can fight infections better. By reducing certain inflammatory prostaglandins, leukotrienes, and interleukins – Omega 3s promote the healthy function of the immune system. Studies have also shown that people with low blood levels of Omega-3’s were more likely to report mild to moderate depression. Numerous studies have shown a link to low Omega-3 levels and various psychological disorders such as bi polar disorder, depression, ADD, and ADHD. Taking supplemental fish oil can help many people improve their moods and fight stress.

Alternatives to Fish Oil

With so many reasons to add fish oil the only thing that may be holding you back is a fish allergy, your distaste for fish, or you don’t want to take fish capsules. There are other sources of Omega-3’s that I recommend. Aside from fish you can also find Omega-3’s in flax seed or flax oil. You can get milled flax seed in the health section of many grocery stores. It is finely chopped up and can be added to your favorite foods. I actually add it to my chili to give it a burst of Omega-3. If you prefer using flax oil a tablespoon or two can be added to a protein smoothie to add a healthy dose of Omega-3’s. Walnuts are especially high in Omega-3’s if you are looking for a healthy on the go snack and you can also buy Omega-3 fortified eggs.

With so many benefits that you can get from fish oil I rank it as the #1 supplement when viewing benefits to cost. For $20 you can get yourself a 3 month supply of double strength fish oil. Try it for 3 months and you might agree it was the best $20 investment you ever made for your body!

Omega-3 A Very Important Supplements

Omega-3’s are one of the most important natural supplements that you can add to your daily diet plan. The problem is that most people don’t eat enough fish or Omega-3 enriched foods on a regular basis to get the full benefits of Omega-3’s. Omega-3’s come from wild foods like fish, flax, and some types of nuts. Omega-3’s are good fats and can actually help turn on your fat burning genes by interacting with your PPAR’s. They bind with your PPAR’s (peroxisome proliferator activated receptors) and increase your metabolism, help you burn fat, and make you more insulin sensitive. When you consume an abundance of bad fats they also bind to your PPAR’s but they shut them down. That is why a diet high in Omega-3’s can help you put a halt to fat gain and reverse it. This is one of the big reasons that Fish Oil has become more and more popular, but if you aren’t a fan of fish and you don’t like taking fish oil capsules there is an alternative in the form of eggs that have been enriched with Omega-3’s.

Where do Omega-3 Eggs Come From – Omega-3 Chickens?

Eggs come from chickens. Yes, you knew that already so I’ll push the envelope of research here and tell you where Omega-3 eggs come from. Omega-3 eggs come from hens that are fed a diet that is rich in Omega-3 fatty acids. They are fed flax seeds to enrich their diet which then causes them to produce eggs that are high in alpha linolenic acid. Each Omega-3 egg contains about 200mg of Omega-3’s. The Omega-3’s are found in the yolk of the egg so if you are a person that eats a majority of the white only you won’t be gaining the benefit of the added Omega 3 so don’t spend the extra money on them.

Eggs Are Bad For You! – No Way!!

Eggs are a great all around protein that can be used to cook up many different types of breakfasts to start the day. They have about 6 grams of quality protein per egg. Eggs have had a bad rap for many years as a food that is high in cholesterol. It’s true. Eggs contain 213mg of cholesterol and the basic recommendations state that you shouldn’t consume more the 300mg of cholesterol per day. This would lead most people to believe that you shouldn’t eat eggs if you are watching your cholesterol. Early research going back as far as 1937 proved that cholesterol that we at has very little effect on cholesterol in the blood. And now we have even newer research by the University of Connecticut, “Eggs Modulate the Inflammatory Response to Carbohydrate Restricted Diets in Overweight Men” by Joseph C. Ratliff that show that eggs are actually anti-inflammatory. They conducted a placebo-controlled study which tracked 28 overweight men who followed a low-carb diet. For 12 weeks 15 of them ate three eggs per day and 12 ate a substitute. The anti-inflammatory effect of the egg-rich diet was “possibly due to the presence of cholesterol” (emphasis added). This diet increased their level of HDL — the “good” — cholesterol and the antioxidant lutein, a potent antioxidant found in egg yolks. Many fitness enthusiasts have proven that as long as the rest of your diet is healthy you can consume a few eggs per day without having any negative impact on your health.

Many Possibilities

Adding eggs to your diet plan creates many meal possibilities. I use them for a quick egg scramble, hard boiled for on the go, or if I have a little more time I make a frittata or omelet and mix them with chopped veggies and fat free cheese. Most recently I have been able to include them in my daily diet to get a healthy dose of omega-3’s in the morning. Prior to Omega-3 eggs I had to get my omega-3’s from fish oil and flax supplements. Now I have another alternative but I use Omega-3 eggs sparingly due to cost. They are relatively more expensive than your regular chicken eggs. If you are trying to add Omega-3’s to your diet but keep costs low you can get 3 times the amount of Omega-3’s in one double strength fish oil capsule. The double strength capsules typically have 600mg of Omega-3’s. It would take 3 whole omega-3 eggs to get that same amount! So for a cheaper alternative remember that you can still enjoy eggs but add a capsule or two of double strength fish oil to your breakfast to start your day. If you are going to eat eggs but aren’t going to be getting any other sources of Omega-3’s in your diet I would highly suggest spending the extra money on enriched eggs in order to get the benefits they provide by binding to your PPAR’s causing you to lose fat rather than gain it. Whatever you decide I suggest making sure you consistently have a steady amount of Omega-3’s for optimal health and fat loss.

Build An Extra Strong Immune System

As we approach the upcoming flu season many people have become worried about the approaching swine flu. WHO has declared a Pandemic Level 6 and mass vaccines have been ordered for the entire world. I’ve never been a fan of vaccines so back in May when the flu started to come to the news I started researching all the possible ways to build up an extra strong immune system. The information that I am presenting is not a substitute for a vaccine or a guarantee that you won’t catch a virus but an alternative through natural means to increase the strength of your own immune system.

Over the summer I have been taking in extra Vitamin C and have added Echinacea to keep my immune system strong. Building your immune system naturally is something that you need to be proactive in and should be doing prior to the outbreak worsening. See my article on Establishing an Armor Plated Immune System. It takes time for your immune system to build up and with all the toxins and allergens in our environment most people’s immune systems are already working at full force. Once you catch a virus it is too late to try to build your immune system because it is now fighting hard against the current infections.

How The Flu Works

Vitamin D Can Help Against Flu?

In my research to learn more and find other things that may assist I started coming across many articles on Vitamin D and how it can help against the flu. Many people have now taken this information and decided that they were going to add a supplemental level of Vitamin D to their diets. The information isn’t proven but it was compelling enough to me to add an extra dose of Vitamin D to my daily regimen.

After reading dozens of articles on Vitamin D and how it can potentially help you fight influenza I found this one to contain a lot of information on some of the probable causes as to why it works and a clinical setting where the doctor discovered that he thought Vitamin D was helping.

Medical News Today

Vitamin D Is A Very Important Nutrient

In more recent articles studies lab work has shown that lack of vitamin D is associated with weaker production of an antimicrobial peptide called hCAP-18, a protein that works with immune-system cells to kill pathogens.

In short they state that people with Vitamin D deficiencies have immune systems that don’t function as well. The shocking thing that you may find is that most people may actually have a Vitamin D deficiency.

Vitamin D is a very important nutrient that is found in very low levels in our food. Milk has been fortified with Vitamin D but with only 100iu’s per serving. Our bodies can produce huge amounts of Vitamin D through exposure to sunlight but the current recommendations on sunlight are to limit your exposure and cover up with sunscreen. So unless you are constantly exposing yourself to the sun, eating enormous quantities of herring and salmon, or drinking a lot of milk daily, then you might be deficient in Vitamin D and a higher risk to catching influenza viruses.

Trials are now moving forward to see what happens when subjects are given 1,200 to 2,000 iu’s per day which is much higher than the recommended 200-600 iu’s per day. There are people taking as high as 5,000 to 10,000 iu’s per day to build up their current blood levels. I’m not going to make any recommendations as the best way to find how much you need is through blood work so to find the optimal level you would need to work with your doctor.

As times change, our environment gets more toxic, and science advances I believe that the levels of all vitamins and minerals should be evaluated. What was good 50 years ago isn’t necessarily still good enough for the constant changes we face. If your are interested in increasing your Vitamin D intake you can find Vitamin D and other immune support supplements here Vitamin D and Immune Support Products. The flu season is approaching so take action now by building your immune system.

Life today is full of deadlines, bills to pay, performance reviews, stacks of mail, and is just sometimes seems too complicated! A recent study has shown that from 1996 to 2005 antidepressant use has doubled in America. By 2005 27 million people have been prescribed antidepressants and that figure continues to rise at an alarming rate. Part of the reason why this may be is that it has become more socially acceptable to be diagnosed with depression or anxiety problems. The drugs are marketed to make you feel better and who doesn’t want to feel better and enjoy life more? We have become a society where many people turn to their doctors first and unfortunately many of those in the medical industry don’t address nutritional needs that the body has so that it can naturally fight the effects of depression and anxiety. A couple years ago I switched primary care doctors because I had a doctor that wrote a prescription for no matter what my problem was. Before long I was on several different medications and realized my medicine cabinet was already starting to look like my grandparents. I should have never let this happen having the knowledge I do in nutrition but sometimes we just think the doctor always knows the best way to fix things and my eating habits had become lazy which is why so many ailments were starting to manifest themselves. The purpose of this article is not to get you to stop taking your medication but to explore alternatives with your doctor and a nutritionist through food and supplementation. In particular I am going to give you some food and supplement ideas to help beat stress and anxiety. These suggestions may enable you to deal with your day to day life easier without seeking pharmaceutical help. In some instances if you are on some type of medications you may be able to work with your doctor and decrease your daily doses as you find improvement through proper diet.

Consistent Blood Sugar Levels with Food
One thing that can make people have mood swings is inconsistent blood sugar levels. If you find yourself constantly irritable or snapping at friends make sure you are eating consistently throughout the day. Eating something every 3-4 hours can keep your blood sugar stable and a steady flow of sugars to your brain. That doesn’t mean loading up on sugary snacks though because the spike in sugar will be followed by a dramatic drop in blood sugar levels leaving you moody again. Try to incorporate proteins, fats, and fibrous carbohydrates in each meal to slow down the digestion of your food providing a steady release of blood sugar into your system.

Foods that help increase brain neurotransmitters
A few foods to incorporate into your diet are bananas, fish, walnuts, and omega 3 fortified eggs. Bananas are a fruit that can actually help with anxiety. They are full of magnesium and B Vitamins which are both depleted by chronic stress. They have also been shown to help the body produce more serotonin. Serotonin is that chemical in your brain that gives you a sense of well being and overall good feelings. The fish, walnuts and omega 3 fortified eggs are an excellent source of Omega 3’s which have been found to be very important for the brain. They have been found to help elevate mood and DHA is especially important in the development of an infant’s brain. DHA has been helpful in patients with ADD and ADHD. A diet high in B Vitamins is critical during times of stress as deficiencies can develop quickly. The whole array of B Vitamins is found in many types of foods. Eating a balanced diet of whole grains, meats, dairy, fruits and vegetables should help you get what you need but many people need a good multivitamin and B complex for daily support.

Supplements for a happy healthy brain
If you have trouble eating to get all of your nutrients each day or just want to make sure you have extra support to help your mood and want to try to alleviate mood swings, depression, and anxiety through supplementation there are a few that may help.

St. Johns Wort
St. John’s Wort has been used for centuries as a tonic and is clinically proven to promote mental well-being and peaceful mood. St. John’s Wort can help maintain a positive mood and is perfect for anyone experiencing occasional anxiety and everyday stress.

B Complex
This will help support nervous system health and recovery from stress. These vitamins deplete quickly from your body under times of stress. A well rounded multivitamin and mineral formula helps to round this out as well.

Antioxidants
Stress creates an abundance of free radicals. The free radicals cause oxidation of your healthy cells and break them down. Antioxidants such as alpha lipoic acid, Co Q-10, acai, and vitamin C and E will fight the radicals and keep your body in a healthy balance.

Fish Oil
Fish Oil is a reputable source of the Omega-3 fatty acid DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid), which is important for mental and visual function, and helps retain triglyceride levels that are already within a normal range.
Ginseng
Ginseng contains ginsenosides and flavanoids – bioactive factors that play a role in well-being. It has been famous for its ability to support physical performance, Ginseng is also gaining a reputation as an immune support herb.

Valerian Root
Valerian works in harmony with your natural cycle to help promote relaxation. It is great at the end of the day prior to bed for a natural relaxant to ease you into sleep. There are also valerian teas available in health food stores and supermarkets.

These are several supplements that you can choose from to add to a healthy nutrition plan but don’t forget to exercise a few days a week. Exercise is also vitally important in helping elevate the mood. Many people that made complete lifestyle changes in their diet and added an exercise and supplement regime have been able to avoid the use of antidepressants or at least use lower doses which is a much better solution for long term usage.

Just about everyone I know has experienced some kinds of aches and pains and some people feel them everyday. More than 60 million Americans suffer from chronic pain. Many of the aches and pains we feel in our joints and muscles are due to inflammation. Inflammation is actually just part of our own body’s defense against things such as infection, toxins, and irritation. Today more than half of Americans are inflamed because of their poor eating habits, lack of exercise, and lack of proper nutrients. When your natural balance of inflammation goes into overdrive you will feel even more pain and swelling everywhere. Aside from the symptoms of pain and swelling it also makes us fat. Then the body fat that you gain actually produces more of the chemicals in your body that cause inflammation so it quickly becomes a vicious cycle and your whole body can be in a state of inflammation. So what can you do about it?

Fish

At the top of the list for is fish for its abundance of omega-3 fatty acids. The EPA and DHA found in fish oil has an anti-inflammatory effect which can reduce pain and stiffness. By adding a 4 ounce serving of fish to your diet 2 to 3 times a week you can reduce inflammation and in many cases take less anti-inflammatory medications.

Olive Oil

An easy way to add more pain relief to your diet is by using olive oil. Olive oil is a very healthy source of monounsaturated fats and has an ingredient known as oleocanthal. Oleocanthal acts very similar to NSAIDS (non steroid anti-inflammatory drugs), such as ibuprofen and naproxen sodium. Studies showed that oleocanthal can inhibit the prostaglandins that cause inflammation, pain and fever. Olive oil can be used in cooking, drizzled over vegetables, and made into dressings.

Fruits and Vegetables – the antioxidant advantage

Most people today have heard the free radicals do major damage to the body and the damage they do can cause cancer. Sometimes free radical production gets so out of hand that it also adds to the inflammation of the cells. The main antioxidant that has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects is Vitamin C which can be found in abundance in various citrus fruits. Other forms of antioxidants are found in noncitrus fruits, all the different berries, and the green dark leafy vegetables. The phrase “eat the rainbow” are words to live by. Take a look in the fruits and vegetables section of your grocery store and buy food of all different colors for added pain relief. Some tropical fruits also have bromelain and papain. Bromelain is found in pineapples and is an enzyme that can block some substances responsible for pain. The papaya, which contains the enzyme papain, has substantial anti-inflammatory properties.

Supplements for pain relief

Fish Oil

Eating your way to relieve pain is one way but if relied upon exclusively it can result in an expensive grocery bill. A simple way to insure you are getting the same benefits is by supplementing with some potent antioxidants and a quality fish oil supplement. If you aren’t a fan of fish or just don’t end up eating a few servings a week you can add fish oil or fish oil capsules to your daily diet. Most people have found this the easiest way to get their EPA and DHA. Aside from the anti-inflammatory benefits found in taking a few grams a day of fish oil, there is also the effects of lowering body fat. Lowering body fat then can lead to your body producing less of the chemicals that cause someone to be in an inflamed state. Another way to get omega-3’s is through flax oil or milled flax seeds. Milled flax seeds can be added to just about anything you are eating like yogurt or dressings and the taste is not discernable so it can be added to almost anything. You can obtain your fishoil supplements from our Puritan’s Pride Store by clicking this link.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a very potent antioxidant that has many benefits and can be taken very inexpensively several times per day. It can help reduce inflammation and help keep your immune system strong. It can be found in 500mg-1000mg strengths and can be taken 3 to 4 times per day for maximal effectiveness. This is probably the cheapest and most widely available method on the marketplace. Stock up on Vitamin C now before the flu season hits! You can obtain your vitamin C supplements from our Puritan’s Pride Store by clicking this link.

Acai

Acai has been hyped as the new wonder supplement for just about anything. It is one of the most potent antioxidants from fruit with the highest known ORAC value. It is a strong antioxidant that has been shown to very effectively reduce inflammation. The main problem with Acai right now is its high exposure and hype. This has led many companies to market very cheap Acai products with trace amounts of Acai. Make sure you buy from a reputable company and stay away from the overhyped ads with the most expensive products. There are several fly by night companies offering acai as a miracle drug and many have products with low quality and small amounts of Acai.

You can obtain your Acai l supplements from our Puritan’s Pride Store by clicking this link.

Consistent exercise for pain relief

The last part of your natural pain relieving arsenal should include some type of exercise. At certain levels exercise produces endorphins. Endorphins are natural opiates that are chemically similar to morphine. Endorphins can give a natural pain killing effect for a period of time. The other chemicals stimulated from exercise are serotonin and norepinephrine. These act by increasing your mood much like antidepressants do. When your mood is elevated your mind will focus less on pain and you will feel better. Exercising for pain relief can come in all forms such as swimming, biking, walking, running, and even light resistance training. Some pains in the body are from muscles and tendons that are too tight pulling on one another creating tension and pain. Massage therapy, stretching, and hot whirlpools can help to alleviate some of this tension.

My pain relief cocktail

As a former infantry marine that used to run for miles in boots and sometimes in full gear including flak jackets and packs I developed some early arthritis in my knees. I used to take NSAIDS like Alleve and Motrin daily to help deal with the constant nagging pain but I’ve found that I can manage the pain even better with steady supplementation. My two favorite supplements for this are fish oil and vitamin C. By taking 3,000mg of Vitamin C per day along with 6 grams of fish oil per day I’m able to alleviate and reduce inflammation and pain to barely noticeable levels. I space these out through the day and I stay consistent with it. In the last year I’ve also added an Acai supplement for an added antioxidant punch.

In many cases pain can be better managed through proper diet, supplementation, and exercise. In extreme cases pain relievers may still be needed but at least the dosage may be reduced which makes for a better long term healthy solution for the body. These recommendations will not work overnight like popping a few pills will but given a couple of weeks time the inflammation in the body will continue to reduce and the benefits will be felt. Stay consistent with this program for a month and you will notice positive benefits that extend beyond just pain relief.
